USDA warns of 'Dust Bowl' as drought damages wheat

US officials warned of conditions in Oklahoma deteriorating in line with those of the infamous 1930s' Dust Bowl as they cut again their rating of the domestic winter wheat crop, underlining findings of a much-watched crop tour.
Plants have been described as being in their worst condition for this reporting week since 1996. A Citigroup analyst said of the winter wheat: "More troubling is the poor/very poor category which is at 39% compared with 34% a week ago."
The deterioration reflected the worsened health of crops in the southern Plains, hard red winter wheat country, where a crop tour last week of Kansas forecast the weakest crop in 18 years in the top US wheat-producing state.
The comments come as hot temperatures continue to plague the US south, although cooler temperatures are expected in the coming week.

CORN:

Corn planting continues in the US, though progress is dependent on who you talk to; according to Doane, “corn planting progress expected to increase to 35-40% as of first week in May, versus a 10-year average of 47%”. CHS said that “the upcoming planting progress report is expected to show 27-29% planted versus 19% last week and a five-year average of 42%”. Benson Quinn Commodities said that "the market is looking for corn planting as of Sunday at 24-27% complete compared to 12% last year and near 45% average". According to Reuters, corn sowing is actually expected by analysts to be 33% finished.
With the markets looking to the future, the strong progress from 19% finished a week before could not stop corn for July soaring 1.8% to $5.08 ¼ a bushel.

SOYBEANS:
RJ O'Brien has indicated that soy liquidation continues as export sales slow to a halt, crush is easing on spring maintenance and concern over tight summer soy stocks are being mitigated by increasing Brazil soy imports. Furthermore, a sharp drop in Chinese futures overnight, and a cut to the commerce ministry estimate for the country's imports last month, did little to help sentiment.
Elsewhere in oilseeds, palm oil futures fell in Kuala Lumpur by 0.6% to 2,568 ringgit a tonne, undermined by revived production ideas.
Chicago soybeans for July stood 0.4% lower at $14.57 ¼ a bushel.
WHEAT:
Soft red winter wheat for July hit $7.44 a bushel in Chicago, the highest for a nearest-but-one contract since February last year, before easing back to stand at $7.41 ½ a bushel with some 15 minutes of trading to go, up 1.7% on the day.
The poor health of the US hard red winter wheat crop has driven the premium of July futures more than \$1-a-bushel above those of lower-protein Chicago soft red winter wheat, the world benchmark, and a crop in far better health. Hard red winter wheat was up 2.5% at $8.52 ½ a bushel, having hit $8.55 ½ a bushel earlier, the highest in 15 months for a second-in contract. Analysts are now expecting a US hard red winter wheat crop of 762m bushels this year, up only 18m bushels despite higher sowings, and the third lowest in 15 years.

2014 harvest prices as of the close of May 7th are as follows:
SWW at $284.42/mt ($7.74/bu), SRW at $270.36/mt ($7.36/bu), HRW at $288.43/mt ($7.85/bu), HRS at $300.89/mt ($8.19/bu).
